files deleted but still holding space

Hi All, I have deleted a large video file and trashed it
but the nearly 50 Gigs it used is still reserved and even
low level programs like Partition Magic and Norton Disk
Doctor see that space as occupied -though the file is gone.

I cannot format the drive as it is my applications
partition.

Has anyone met this problem before and knows a workaround
to non-destructively recover my disk space?

Have you emptied the Recycle Bin and - or Norton Protected Files
