Files autoplay when file properties are displayed

I posted this message in one of the Media Player forums over 2 weeks ago, but
since no one replied I am reposting it here.

I've noticed an annoyance lately that I have been unable to prevent. When
using Windows Explorer, every time I view the file properties of a multimedia
file (wav, mp3, avi, etc.) it automatically starts playing the file in the
2nd tab of the properties window. This would not really be a problem, except
if I don't go to tab 2 and stop the file, the audio continues to play after I
have closed the properties window. If I happened to be viewing properties of
an hour long video, the audio would continue for an hour until the file was
done. I haven't let it run that long yet, I always reboot my computer since
that is the only thing that seems to stop it.

Does anyone know how to disable this autoplay setting? I'm not sure what
started it in the first place, and I can't find any settings in Windows
Explorer or
WMP to prevent it. I'm running WinXP Pro SP2 and WMP 10, btw.

Hi Jeff,

What's the name of the 2nd tab. It certainly looks like a third-party addon,
as the playback function (in the Properties sheet) has been removed in
Windows XP.

The second tab shows the name of the file I am viewing as its title. When I
view properties for an MP3, for example, the tabs I have are: 1st - General,
2nd - filename.mp3, 3rd - Summary. It sure looks like a Windows Media Player
control set on that tab, and I'm not aware of installing any addons that
would do this. Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

I don't have the 2nd tab (filename.mp3) here, running WMP11. Can I have the
file association details for .mp3 file type? You can use the FileExtInfo
tool to generate the report.

FileExtInfo - View the association settings for a file type easily:
