Filed Codes

I have a Word document that has 18 pages. The table of contents (TOC) starts
on Page 3. Pages 1 and 2 is from another document. The total number of
pages of the hard copy document will thus be 20 pages.

The number of pages shown in the footer must therefore be 20 in the format
of Page # of 20.

I've tried the Formula {=(2)+{NUMPAGES}} as shown in the help function by
typing it in manually and using the formula builder, but it gives me a
!Syntax error!.

Please help with the format and numbers

I am not sure where you found the field or even if it will achieve what you
want. To add 2 to the numpages field you would normally enter
{ ={ Numpages } + 2 }
the brackets are all entered in pairs with CTRL+F9 and not typed from the
keyboard.
If there are 18 pages in the document this will enter 20.
Calculated page fields will not be reflected in the document so if you were
to set

Page {={Page}+2} of { ={ Numpages } + 2 }
the document would show page Page 20 of 20
but the TOC would show Page 18.

If you want the page numbers correct in both, you are going to have to
combine the documents or add two blank pages to the start of your document
so that the numbering on paper and TOC will be correct without calculations.
You can then slip your other documents in place of the blanks.

If you take the blank page approach you could then use

{IF {Page} > 2 "Page {Page} of {Numpages}"}

to avoid printing page numbers on the blank pages.

No need to use such a field, use the standard Page Number field and under
Page Number Format have it "Start at" 3.
Hope this helps

Hi Graham

Thanks for the info

I've typed "Page" and then entered the page number field from the Insert /
Page number menu. I selected format and then set it to start the page number
at 3.

This solved the issue that the page numbers for the headings is correc in
the TOC. The field code for this part still still shows {Page} when you
toggle to show the field code

For the second part I've used {={NUMPAGES}+2} and that shows the required 20
pages.

The problem was that I typed the { } brackets from the keyboard and not
inserting it with Ctrl F9. This now works perfectly and does exactly what I
want
