File won't open after I renamed the extension!!!

I have been syncing an important excel file between my
Pocket PC and and laptop computer using Pocket Excel (.pxl
extension) and Excel 2000 (.xls extension). One day, I
couldn't open on my Excel 2000 and I decided to rename the
file with a .xls to see if it would open. Not only would
it not open, but it immediately synced with my Pocket PC
and now it won't open their either....saying that it is an
unrecognizable file format on both. I have tried to
rename, open with different programs, etc...but just can't
seem to get my file back. This is an important file for
both me and my wife and any ideas / help for recovering it
would be greatly appreciated.
