Chart sheets renamed

I have Excel 2007 and work with files in the .xlsx and .xls format. Many
times I have found that all my sheet names for charts are renamed to
"Chart1", "Chart2", etc. when I have both types of files open. Has anyone
else experienced this, and how can I notify Microsoft of this (very annoying)
bug?

Hi Dan,

I have not been able to duplicate your problem. More detail is needed - You
have both 2003 and 2007 open at the same time? Differeent files in both.
You have charts in both files and some of them are being renamed. When are
they renamed? It's not the same file in both versions at the same time is
it? I can report bugs directly to MS but I need to be able to duplicate the
problems.

Hi Shane. I have two workbooks open in Excel 2007, but one is in
compatibility mode (.xls) and the other is not (.xlsx). The renaming issue
happens to all chart worksheets in the file that is running in native mode,
but I don't think it has ever happened to any charts in the workbook running
in compatibility mode. This bug does not appear to be linked to a specific
workbook or combination of workbooks, since it has happened with at least two
different sets of files. And it is not the same file in both versions.

Unfortunately I haven't noticed when the renaming occurs and don't have any
other clues to help reproduce the error. I'll try to be more vigilant.
Thanks.

Hi Dan,

Let me know when you have more info. Try to track which file (xls or xlsx)
was opened first. Whether the renaming occured as you opened it or later. If
later what were you doing. And anything else that you thing might be
relivant and if I can reproduce it I will send it to MS.

I am having the same problem as Dan. Our files began as an xls file, but we
have changed it into an xlsx file and that is the only way that we work with
it. For a week, the sheet names that we have assigned to the charts stay just
fine, and then we will open it and everything will be renamed to Chart1,
Chart2, etc. Strangely, this doesn't affect our sheets with data in them,
only the ones we have charts in. Also, it doesn't seem to affect every single
chart, just 90% of them. What other information do you need to try to report
or help?

I have the same problem using Excel 2007. I don't believe this is related to
compatibility mode as I routinely have this problem when using all native
..xlsx worksheets.

I have 20 worksheets that all use the same template - each has 12 or more
chart tabs, all custom named. About 50% (or more) of the time, these
spreadsheets open with all the chart tabs renamed to "chart1" etc. Strangely,
it seems to be consistent in that some of my spreadsheets always open up with
their custom names, and some will consisently lose their names. I have not
documented any cases where the default names come up and then sometime later
the custom names magically reappear.

Since my spreadsheets all use the same template, I have taken some of the
"good" ones (where the custom tab names remain) and saved copies of them,
updated with appropriate data, and then seen them lose their custom tab names
on a future open. To be clear: I have one spreadsheet that opens with "good"
tab names, I save two copies of it with different data tables in one tab (but
nothing else changed, all charts are dynamically derived). One copy will keep
opening with custom tab names, and one will not.

This is a very annoying bug that seems specific to 2007.
