File uploading error-suicidal almost

D

Donna

FP2002, WinXPPro

I have been trying to update my site for two days now and have been trying
to get the problem resolved with my provider--so far, big mystery.

I keep receiving the message (after 8 minutes of trying to upload 65kb gif
files) "The server has unexplainably closed the connection." It takes about
8 minutes before I get this message, once I hit the ok button to save the
file. In that 8 minutes, I go smoke myself to death, because you cannot
cancel, escape, stop or go anywhere. Everything is locked up. Can't even
open another program.

I have tried to do this uploading, both from the page embedding image method
and by trying to import the image first into the site and then placing on
the page from within the site. It is not coming from just one image file. It
has happened many times in the past two days loading different pages and
different images.

There is another error message that is also surfacing every once in a while
in lieu of the first one above. It states something to the effect that the
server sent a message which FP could not parse. Check to see if FP Server
extensions are installed properly.

I believe that my provider has installed extensions correctly, as I have
used them for about 5 years now with all versions of FP up to 2002, which I
am presently using.

Please--anyone got an answer for me?

?

=?iso-8859-1?Q?Crash_Gordon=AE?=

What is the "page embedding image method" ?

How are you trying to publish, exactly.

btw, Extensions can be properly installed but not necessarily in working condition.

Sorry, what I meant by that was that I would design a new page and use the
insert-file method on the page to load the gif/jpg. Then when I choose Save
(for the page), the dialog box comes up from FP that it needs to save the
embedded image. When this starts is when I have the time-out issue. It has
worked about 50% of the time. The other method I try is to use the Import
command to import the image first into the site and then load that image to
the new page. When you do that, you don't get that embedded save dialog box.

I upload directly to my site live--not Ftp method. Can't remember how this
is configured or where, but I work on my site live, so that when I save a
file, it goes up to the host provider immediately.

Got a new message from the provider tech support and of course they can not
duplicate the problem, so I am hoping someone here can help. Thanks.

Always use the File Import method before you use an image in your site

Always working on your live site is not recommended
- you have not safety net, and are subject to server timeouts or critical errors that can clobber your site
- Publish your online site to a local site for safer / faster working

Also try some cleanup before you open your site in FP
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
3) Open your FP Web/Site and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks

Thanks for the suggestions, I will try them. The only reason I work "live"
on my site is because somehow it got set up so that when I open FP, I am
automatically online and I am not sure how to get "offline", so to speak.
