I bought a new computer and I'm trying to use the file transfer wizard to
update my new machine. I connected both w/ a serial cable.
Eventhough the computers try to connect, they just stay in the "please wait
while the wizard conects to the other computer" for hours...
Both are Dell, one is a dimension, the other is an optiplex
HEEEEEEEEEELP!
Using a serial cable to transfer any substantial amount of data (e.g.
more than a few megabytes) is going to take a lonnnnnnnnnnng time.
Serial cables are slow = 100 kbps
A parallel port transfer cable would be 8 times faster.
A peer-to-peer network configuration using a crossover cable, would be
up to 100 times faster even at 10 mbps, and 10 times faster still at
100 mbps.
A usb data transfer cable would be about the same as a 10 mbps network
or maybe a bit faster.
My preferred method of transfering data with the Files and Settings
Transfer Wizard is to create a folder named c;\transfer on the hard
drive of the old machine and have FASTW save the data there. Then I
remove the hard drive from the old machine, install it temporarily as
a second hard drive in the new machine, and run FASTW to import the
saved data.
Good luck
