My new computer runs Win XP Pro; I have installed only a few
utilities and the modem so far, and want to transfer stuff from the
old computer (particularly email, address books, etc.)

According to info I read on Microsoft site, I can use removeable media
(floppy or CD) to copy the files/settings from old computer, then use
Wizard on new computer to install.

Okay, so I make the floppy disk, put it in the old computer and ran
the F&TWizard. One dialog box asks where I want to send my selected
files and offers "floppy disk or other removable media." While "a:"
drive is highlighted, the drive with the Cd writer is invisible and I
cannot figure how to make it recognized. (Drive D: is Plextor
read/write, using Direct CD or Easy CD as required). The CD was
formatted for reading on any computer and the drive shows up if I use
the "Send to" feature.

Old computer: If I were to select "save to removable drive or hard
drive", such as C:, I am asked if I want to put the stuff in a
particular folder, or name a folder. Do I do either, or just hit the
save? If that works, would I then copy the whole thing to a CD and
move it over to the new computer? And will naming a folder interfere
with the new computer's ability to see the transferred stuff?

I am at a loss so far. The cable method would not work for me
because I only have one monitor (the "old" monitor isn't very old, so
I will use it with the new computer). Right now, I am moving cables
back and forth between computer boxes so I can continue my work on
the old box while I try to get the new one up to speed.

All suggestions are welcome. -- Judy

Export to some folder on the hard drive, burn to cd, take to new machine,
import.

Windows XP does not support packet writing..

Judy,

I believe that the transfer wizard won't save directly to a CD drive, even
if you're using a CD-RW disk and the drive is assigned a letter though
packet writing software (Roxio DirectCD, Nero InCD, etc.).

Your idea will work fine: create a folder on your hard drive, and save the
transfer file to that. Burn a copy of the folder onto a CD.

I don't recall whether the transfer wizard will read from the CD on the new
PC, but I believe that it will. If not, just copy the folder from the CD to
the hard drive of the new system.

Here's a suggestion - fix your calendar - today is the 13th, not the 14th.

The OP is posting 24 hours in the future keeping the message
at the top of the list. I usually delete these right away,
but just checked the NG. Now, I will delete it.

The curse of OE: it trusts the date of newsgroup postings. (Mozilla
Thunderbird can figure out the order using other headers)

Bruce I did see that and I did delete it right away. But what threw me off
is the Date that was posted by S as the 14th. I saw only the 13th from the
OP

That's West Coast US PDT. ZULU - 7 Hours. Same as me, but
it's still the 12th.

maybe???

I see you're ZULU - 4 which would put you in the east coast
EDT.

Irregardless, if your clock is correct, the viewer sees
their time. i.e. when someone posts at 7PM EDT, It shows up
here as 4PM PDT. The correction is automatic.

My mother was an English major and would probably have had a
similar comment.

But *regardless*.

"Irregardless," on the other hand, is nonstandard usage for
"regardless." It's a "word" that educated people should
avoid in their writing and speaking".

Guess that means I'm an *educated people*? <grin>

Hi Judith,

I have used this method for years without ever using the built in XP service
and it works.

If you don't mind having Signatures, Rules and all the other settings the
same, this method works.

From the user account that is already set up:

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and locate the following 4 branches of the Registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\Wab File Name

Right click on each branch above and select Export and save the REG files to
your hard drive.

For each account you want to have the same mail settings, log into that
account. Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT. Locate the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities branch, right click it and select Delete.
Next open Windows Explorer and locate the 4 REG files you saved above.
Double click each one and answer yes to the import prompt.

Now you can open OE in any of the User accounts, and all the settings,
accounts, will be the same.

This was tested with the Mail and News Store on a FAT32 drive. I can't
guarantee it will work on an NTFS drive.

Note: You will need to re-enter the passwords for mail and news group
accounts.

Note2: If you use Signatures, you should put them in a text file and change
OE's settings to use them. Signatures are often corrupted during the
import. This is due to the Unicode storage of the signatures in the
Registry.

Express Assist is a very easy to use utility to backup all of your Outlook
Express mail folders (including all attachments) as a single compressed,
backup file. You can easily restore one, all, or any selection, of the mail
folders saved in your backup file. In addition, you may synchronize your
current Outlook Express message folders with message folders saved in the
Express Assist backup.

I'm the mysterious 'S', Bruce, and I am most certainly *NOT* in Italy
(although I did spend a year in Rome when I was studying) - you ever heard
of DST? ;o) I'm Zulu time.

Oh, and there's no such word as 'irregardless' - what does it mean?
'Regardless' (in this context) means "nevertheless; in spite of everything",
so 'irregardless" would mean what, exactly...? ;o)

Using Thunderbird, can you have the posting sorted (descending) by date and
have the watched postings at the top? Does it have watched postings? Is
there a newsgroup supporting Thunderbird?
