My C drive has 22Gb spare according to Widows Explorer, yet it won't allow
me to transfer a 15Gb file from an external HD to the Internal one - why
should that be and any way around it?

If the partition you're copying that file to uses the FAT32 file
system, then the largest file it can handle is 4GB. One of the
advantages that NTFS has over FAT32 is that it can handle huge files,
but FAT32 maxes out at 4GB.

And how would I be able to find out if this is the problem?

Right-click My Computer, and Select Properties.

Near the top is a section containing Type: and File System: The file system
is either FAT, FAT32, or NTFS.
