I tried transferring a 5.3Gb video file from a laptop to a
desktop. The desktop hard drive has 22Gb free, but when I
attempted the transfer, I received a message that the hard
drive did not have enough free space. What caused this and
how can I get around it? Both pc's have XP Home version
with sp1.

What is the format of the receiving hard drive? If it is FAT 32 the file
size can't be larger than 4 GB. NTFS format should be able to move files
larger than that.

Is the destination drive FAT32 by any chance? FAT32 has
a 4GB limit.

This sounds like the drive you're trying to transfer to is FAT32.
FAT32 has a 4GB maximum file size, which is why it fails.

If the desktop hard disk is using the FAT 32 file system, that has an
absolute limit of 4GB on the size of a file; the laptop must be NTFS,
which doesn't
