File to deep when attempting to copy?

I have a 4GB file backed up to a USB 2.0 drive. When I attempt to copy it
back to my harddrive, it eventually times out with a message stating
somthing like the file is too deep?

Does anyone know what would cause this... and how to get around it?
 
What is the format of the USB 2.0 drive? If the drive is using FAT32, there
is a 4GB file size limit.
