"file" tab in tool bar NOT showing up!

Hi -
we have reset the toolbar, restarted word, re customized the tool bar etc..
and THE WORD 'FILE' does not appear. all of the other menu's are there
including 'edit', 'view' etc.
we have gone into 'customize' toolbars - commands, options, but nothing is
working. it at first seems like a very easy fix - it seems like the toolbar
is shifted to the left .. but its not - we minimized and maximized the word
screen over and over again.
please help! thanks
