file structure problem

I have the XP Pro operating system.
I need to run chkdsk.
But to do that I need to create the Recovery Console for access at bootup
time.
But when I try to do that I get a message that my current version of Windows
is newer than that of the CD.
Do I have any options other than reformatting the hard drive and starting
over?

first off...
to run chkdsk all you have to do is open the command prompt
then type and enter: chkdsk /f

you will be asked if you want to run it at startup...
just say yes and reboot...

if you do need to enter the repair console...
you will have to recreate your XP cd with sp2 slipstreamed into it...

you can google for instructions as how to do that
 
Entering chkdsk /f from the Command Prompt results in a
"Cannot open volume for direct access." response.
