This has already been covered & is a separate issue from sub-folder
placement. Suggestion sent to MS to keep sub-folders at the top (or as
an option) & to treat shortcuts to folders as sub-folders in all sorting
criteria rather than being interspersed with files.

Lemon Jelly;

Michel's post and copy of David Candy's, yours and
my post are the only ones I can see in this thread.

What am I missing?
Never mind. Did a Google Search and found the
rest of the posts.

I'll quietly leave now.)

You're welcome.

Mmm, I didn't have any problem in fact. Just "grumpy" because the way XP
works.
The "intuitive filename sorting" helps in some cases and I had it enabled
since long time ago. It just doesn't correct the fact that folders shouldn't
definitely not being send to the bottom when you reverse the sort order.

Same way, shorcuts folders (old fashioned - and "new fashioned", those you
can do in start menu, you know ?) should stay grouped with "true" folders,
when sorted. And we should have a way to set and memorize our favorite view
in open/save dialogs.

Dear Michel:

Thanks for your contribution. You expressed the problem so
succinctly, that's a talent. You may wish to check out my web page on
the matter. You can see that I had a lot of trouble just getting
people to recognize and acknowledge the problem.

Please email Microsoft at (e-mail address removed) and express your/our
concern and do feel free to reference my web site. The more people
that raise this issue the more likely it will be fixed addressed.

I added your comments to my web page.

Sincerely,
Shawna

What a horrible web page - only go there if you like lots of pop up windows
that won't allow you to close

DON'T SPAM THE CHANNEL :p

You know Richard, Upon receiving complaints such as yours, I have
asked for tips on where to find a free web host that does not send
irritating popups. Nobody has bothered to suggest any so my page
stays where it is. It's been as successful as solving my problem. At
any rate, I don't think it qualifies as "horrible" though. BTW, My
popups that won't close with a mouse click do close using alt-F4.

Sorry,
Shawna

I checked your page and no popups at all for me. I don't know exactly what
he meant.

Pardon the late response, but can't you get what you want by clicking the
Folders button so that Folders show up sorted alphabetically on the left
side and files show up sorted whichever way you like on the right side?

And, yes, your web page is a LRTP(long roll of toilet paper) but I didn't
get any pop-ups there.

Bill,

Thanks for your input, belated or not. I see what you mean and agree
that the info is in fact available in various ways.

Under your solution, if I was looking for files relevant to X, and
therefore navigate to folder X, I am not interested in information
that does not apply to X. That is what your solution does; it
provides information on the entire directory tree. This is extraneous
info that just clutters the focus.

Your solution gets close but not close enough for my satisfaction. I
think it's possible that the only way the old way can truly be
appreciated is to have experience using regularly with lots of file
searching, updating and sorting.

I don't mind MS adding new features, some of them are great. Some of
them I would hate to lose in future versions. This is a feature that
has been lost. For me it's NOT a minor thing. It bugs my every day.
Maybe next time they drop out a feature thinking it is obsolete it
will be one that is indispensable to you.

Thanks again,
Shawna

Hi Shawna,

Got to reading your website and have an observation:

Win98SE sorts like XP... folders to top (sorted oldest), bottom (sorted
newest)

Thought you'd like to know...

Fritz216

PS Actually, there have been some times when I wished I could 'hide' the
folders from the list... my My Documents folder has about 40 - 50 subfolders
in it... there are time I wished I could've hidden the folder list so I
could've seen the files without having to sroll away :)

FWIW. The free version of PowerDesk 5 sorts as Shawna desires (folders
always on top) and allows you to Filter the view -
1) Files & Folders (folders on top)
2) Files only
3) Folders only
...

I use it as an adjuct to Explorer.

The only solution without resorting to 3rd party apps I know of is a
kludge & that is to open a second instance of the folder then sort both
according to one's needs then drag files across to the desired folder.
You may need to open the second above the desired folder then navigate
downwards otherwise the latter attempt will merely jump to the already
opened first instance as is the case when clicking on folder shortcuts
twice.

I wish Explorer had the functionality available in Ztree such as listing
all files in a folder branch in one window. Ztree is a great replacement
for Xtree but runs in a command window so no Drag & Drop from Explorer.
Ztree also allows tagging of files that won't cancel highlighted
file/folders by inadvertently clicking in the wrong place.

Hi Shawna,

I just came across this thread by accident (the subject of the thread isn't
exactly helpful) and just want to say that I know *exactly* what you are
talking about and agree with you 100%. I noticed the sort problem the
first time I used XP and it really bothered me.

I asked about it in newsgroups and mentioned it to other IT professionals
and just got a lot of denial and ignorant replies from otherwise intelligent
people: "XP sorts just like all previous versions of windows"; "Just click
at the top of the column you want to sort"; "What do you mean - the
folders are still at the top?"; and on and on. I started to feel like I was
in the Twilight Zone!

Hope we can get this changed. You don't have to be Spock to see how
illogical the new sort rules are.

D.C.
