File sharing

Hi All,

I have just installed Windows Vista Business 32-bit on a brand new system
for a customer and I tried to enable "public file sharing" and I keep
getting a message "RPC server is unavailable". I know that the service is
started because I have verified it and I have run net start rpcss as well.
I had the same issue with a different hard drive yesterday after deploying
it at a customers location and thought it was a fluke thing so I brought the
computer back to my office and loaded another drive with vista business and
before loading any other files on it I tried to enable file sharing and get
the same results!

This started when we tried to enable print sharing and were denied stating
error 0x00000007a

Since I could not enable print sharing I thought I would just try to enable
file sharing and that is when I discovered this issue. Currently no AV
software, windows firewall is turned off and my options to restart the RPC
service is greyed out.

Please HELP!

Thanks,
Tim

This should not happen if you are installing a standard copy of any flavor
of Vista.
If you search the web you will find references about the RPC server issue
and potential solutions.
When you describe "Public file sharing" it is not clear if you are referring
to the "Public" directory or are trying to activate sharing on other
directories.
The "Public" folder is shared by default. In fact, it used to be the only
folder that would stably hold permission settings from session to session in
all versions of Vista.
If you are trying to share a particular folder or file you have to drill
down the Vista permission settings to allow sharing. I believe that service
packs have made network file sharing more stable on Vista but no more
intuitive to set up.

Well it is very interesting that I may have stumbled on a glitch...

The install was a ghosted image meaning that I had created an image and then
used that used Ghost to copy that drive to speed up my system builds.
However it seems that the copied image does not allow file sharing but after
I reinstalled the OS straight from the CD everything worked perfect. If
that is normal then that sucks because it sure made system building faster
when I could copy a drive with ghost in less than 10 minutes.
