File Sharing Will Not Enable

Guest

Hello. I have been trying to figure this problem out and have had no luck.
I have searched but have found no reference to anyone having my problem. I
am running Windows Vista Business 32bit. When I go to the network and sharing
center and click on file sharing, I choose "Turn on file sharing" and then
hit apply. The problem is that file sharing stays turned off. There is no
error display at all. I am at a loss of what can be causing this.. Network
discovery is turned on. If i try to turn on public folder sharing I get a
error that says "The RPC server is unavalible". I can turn on "Password
protected sharing" and "Media Sharing" with no problem. With those turned on
I still cannot turn on file sharing. Thank you all in advance for any help
you can provide.

Have you enabled File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks? Also what's the result if using net share command?

Thank you for the quick response. I checked and File and Printer
sharing for Microsoft Networks is enabled in the properties of my network
adapter. I am not familiar with the net share command, but when i type "net
share" in the cmd window i get the following response. "The service name
is invalid" "More help by typing NET HELPMSG 2185" When i type that in, I get
the same error displayed "The service name is invalid" Thanks again to
anyone who can help me with this problem.

When doing net share command, you should have similar result:

C:\Documents and Settings\blin>net share

Share name Resource Remark

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IPC$ Remote IPC
print$ C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers
Printer Drivers
C$ C:\ Default share
ADMIN$ C:\WINDOWS Remote Admin
Temp C:\Temp
HP5m IP_192.168.10.99 Spooled HP LaserJet 5MP
The command completed successfully.

Thanks for all the help so far. I have checked for viruses using the latest
versions and virus definitions from AVG, Norton, and Windows One care
service. I have used Spybot search and destroy, Adaware, AVG Spyware ans
Zonealarm's Spyware to check my system. All say it is clean with no
infections. Is there anything else I can try other than re-installing.

Thanks Agian.

Nothing I did would fix this problem. I looked for answers for many months
and tried MANY things. I ended up doing a clean install. Sorry.
