Network Discovery is only the ability to see other computers using the Windows
Vista LLTD discovery mechanism. When file and printer sharing is properly
setup, you may be able to access a share from the Network Map, but the Network
Map isn't the only sharing client component. Network Neighbourhood (My Network
Places) still works under Vista, and for all versions of Windows - not just XP
with the LLTD client. For simpler access, there's still Run - "\\server\share".

You can file share, with or without LLTD and the Network Map. The Network Map
just makes it "easier".
