Unable to access local share - Vista Ultimate

S

sb

I am trying to access the public folder from another computer on my local
network. After failing I started diagnosis at the local machine. I have UAC
turned off and have shared the public folder (c:\users\public) with full
control, change and read for everyone in share and Full control for everyone
in the security tab. I can access the folder in windows explorer. If I select
start network, machine name, public, I get a message that
\\machinename\public is not accessible. Network and sharing center show the
following:
Network Discovery on
File Sharing on
Public floder sharing on (password required)
Printer sharing off
Password Protected Sharing on
Media sharing off

If I click on the link to show me all the files and folders that I am
sharing nothing is displayed.

This is all local, not via the network. Any idea what I might have missed/

I am not sure I understand the issue. Assuming you can access any files
using Windows explorer but not from Network>Hostname>Public. It could be a
security software issue. Try to start the Vista from the clean booting.
Please post back with the result.

Thanks Robert,

I have tried the clean boot with no change.
I am trying to work out why I cannot access a share over the network. First
I need to prove that the local machine and share are working properly. In XP
if I open network places and select a local share I am taken to the share,
i.e. I can see the contents. At present I cannot do this in Vista. The fact
that I get an error message that the share is not accessible is telling me
that there is some problem with file sharing on my vista machine. I'm just
trying to work out what it is and resolve it so I can then access the share
from another machine on my network.

thanks again

Yes I can see the public folder with net share, also with a net view
\\machine name. net use * \\machinename\public results in a system error 51.

System error 51 is sharing issue. Any errors in the Event Viewer?

Nothing obvious in the event log. The remote computer not being available
doesn't make sense because it is the local computer that is trying to be
accessed. I changed the name of the computer but the results were the same.

Ok problem resolved. It seems that turning on file sharing in the Network and
Sharing Centre does not enable file sharing on all interfaces. After enabling
file sharing on my wireless interface I am able to access local shares.

Thanks for your assistance Robert, I would suggest that this is a bug.

Control panel, network connections, select the wireless adapter, right click
properties and then check the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft
Networks. Unfortunately the setting is not permanent, it does not survive a
reboot or drop in the wireless network.
