File sharing - set up not working

Guest

I have been attempting to get file sharing working between between my desktop
and laptop. Desktop has Ultimate, Laptop has Home Premium, both new
installs. I ensured they are both on the same workgroup "Workgroup", set up
both as "Private Network" with Network discovery, File sharing, and Public
folder sharing set to on. In my research of this issue I even opened up
ports: UDP 3702 and TCP 5357-5358 on my router... still nothing.

Your help is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Dan,

Opening router ports will have nothing to do with getting file sharing to work
between computers that are behind the router. What's TCP 5357-5358 / UDP 3702?

Diagnose the problem. Look at logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all",
"net config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer. Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):
