File sharing problem

Hello,

Just having a file sharing problem I can't seem to get rid of....

I have 4 computers on the network - two on Windows 95, one on Windows 98SE,
and another with Win XP Home.

The problem seems to be with the XP system - as weird as that sounds. On all
of the Win 9X machines, I can ping one another from another and I can do a
net view \\machinename and get a list of shared resources - This is includes
being able to ping and net view the XP machine.

The problem lies when I do a net view from the XP machine to any other
computer on the network. At first I get a System error 1, sometimes it's 53,
other times it could be 1231. I've done everything I could to try to resolve
it - Making sure the XP firewall is off, tried disabling the McAfee
firewall, etc. Weird thing is that I never had this problem until the last
few days. I haven't added anything or done anything to my network
configuration, so I'm at a loss :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Un-install the McAfee firewall to see if it's causing the problem. If
that would leave the XP computer open to the Internet, unplug the
Internet connection during that time.

Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on XP:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection and click Properties.
3. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Advanced.
5. Click WINS.
6. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

Try using the network with the Computer Browser service started and
with it stopped.

No luck with that so far.

I tried doing a net view, both with it disabled and, of course, enabled....
At first I received the message, System error 1 has occured - Incorrect
function, then I started getting System error 53. I can still ping any
machine from the XP machine just fine. When trying to bring up a computers
shared resources from the XP machine by putting \\machine_name in the
address bar, it says it cannot find it. However, when I go to Network Places
and View Workgroup Computers, all the machines are listed on the network
there... When I try and right-click and go to Properties from there, I get
and error that says, The server SERVER does not accept remote requests.

Thanks :)

Wow - The simplest answers always seem to work......

I'm not sure why I never thought of this before - All I did was uninstall
the network adapter, then do a hardware re-scan. After that everything is
working perfectly. Not sure what caused it in the first place, but this
definitely fixed it.

Just wanted to let whoever has been working on this know. Thanks all for the
input and suggestions.
