andrew

i got a network here with 3 comps (all running winxp), it
runs really well. so does file sharing in general, but
when i try to access the user folders (which is
c:\documents and settings\xxuserxx\ ) it blocks out
everything in there from another computer. even when i
set the entire drive to full read and write access, and
the xxuserxx folder as well, it still says i dont have
permission to access it. everything else works fine, its
just those user accounts including "desktop" and "my
documents" that i need to access from the other
computers. anyone know how to give other computers on
the network full access to them? thanks, andrew.

You need to tell us whether these are Home or Pro, and
if Pro whether you are using / want to use Simple Sharing
mode or not.

its XPpro. im not sure if its simple sharing mode of
not. i went to the sharing tab in the drive properties
and cliked "share this folder", typed the share name and
clicked "ok". if that helps u to determine if its simple
or not. ive had a look through some properties with
permissions, with options like "system", "owner", "admin"
etc and i put them all on full access with read and
write. but still no access to the users documents and all
that

Well, with Pro you have the options of setting Simple
sharing on or off at the base of the View tab in the Folder
Options of Explorer.
When this is off, to share a user's profile one needs to
use the Sharing tab to share it out. While there click the
permissions button to make sure that the account that will
be used over the network to access the share is in one of
the groups listed. The only other thing needed is to make
sure that that same account also has permissions at the NTFS
filesystem level. Setting this from the top is not a valid
approach, as inheritance is blocked. Do the checking of
the NTFS permissions directly on the folder.
