I’m having problems trying to share files, folders, drives and printer
between a new build PC, which is running XP Pro and my old PC which is
running XP Home. Although the Internet connection between the two is working
fine I have no luck trying to share files and folders.
I have checked that computer browser and TCP/IP NetBios services are both
set at ‘Started’

My configurations are as follows:

As you can see I am running Internet through old PC to new PC and have no
problems pinging between PCs.
Problem arises when trying to set up file transfer wizard from old PC to new
PC, when old PC asks for new PCs password I get the reply that new PC is not
recognised and same result when trying to get new PC to old PC.
Right clicking and sharing folders does not work either nor does sending to
print from new PC to old PC. Old PC has direct connection to printer.
Both PCs are using the same workgroup .

Getting confusing now, I shall leave it at that for the moment.
Any help greatly appreciated.

OK, both IPConfigs show connectivity, and name resolution, should work.

What is the exact message for "new PC is not recognised"?

Do any of the computers have a software firewall (ICF / WF, or third party)? If
so, you need to configure them for file sharing. Firewall configurations are a
very common cause of (network) browser, and file sharing, problems.

Is the computer browser running on both ERIC1 and RUNNINGTIM? It should be
running on just one, confusion can be caused by running it on both computers.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure both computers list the same master
browser.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
