We are trying to istall our application on a customer's
system - they have Windows XP SP1, but our software's
licencing routine will not work as it doe not have full
access rights to the application's data folder.

When clicking the properties of the folder it appears to
be semi-read-only i.e. shaded read-only tick. Trying to
untick this is always ignored.

I believe this may be related to KB Article 863023.

How can I get hold of the hot fix mentioned here as i have
used up free support against my product ID? I NEED this
fix urgently, can anyone please help?

thanks
Giles

If you have a business then you should be dealing with tech support. How lame is it to come in here looking for free help when the fix could make you a ton of cash. Pay the lousy fee and have tech support help you out. Not to mention that nobody in here has the slightest idea what type of application you are trying to apply or what it needs to do.

Wow - way to make friends. The newsgroups *are* a form of tech support.

That's fine & can be ignored - the folder itself is not the issue. Check the
NTFS permissions on that folder and set the group(s) you wish to full
control and push the permissions down the entire tree.

That KB doesn't show up on the MS page....perhaps it's been pulled for
modification/correction.

You don't need to pay for hotfixes if you're experiencing the symptoms the
KBs describe - you call MS and tell them the KB number & they should give
you the hotfix for free. That said, the missing KB may represent a problem
there. Are you sure you've typed the number correctly?

Does the user account you are installing the software under have admin
rights?

You also might try opening a cmd prompt, going to the directory in
questions, and run the attrib command to remove any attributes you don't
want.

Sorry for the above post but I consider this more for the everyday person that does not have the resources that a company would have and for people that don't make money from what they get in here.

Please quote the post you are replying to - not everyone by a long chalk is
using the web interface.

Thank you.

You are using Outlook Express? (or at least your posting says you are).
On Menu: View, Current View, turn on "Group Messages by Conversation".

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

I am, but in a HIGH volume group such as this, I only display Unread
messages otherwise the screen would have THOUSANDS of posts to wade
through. As do many other experienced users, hence the constant calls for
posters to quote!

OK. I use Mozilla and it shows the full thread above for only un-read
(configurable to do this, of course). This keeps the volume way down
but still retaining the thread.

You may like Mozilla's newsreader more than Outlook Express, given your
approach. Just a thought...

I use Thunderbird at home :-) - work only has OE :-(

Thank you all for your help... I have managed to get hold
of the hotfix, so hopefully will do the trick.

Knowledgbase Article was in fact 836023.

To Defender of the Meek: People like you make me laugh,
with such an attitude I wonder how you ever get by in
life :)

I'm not Gordon, but like him (presumably) and like many other
newsgroup participants, I have Outlook Express set to hide
already-read messages, even though I *do* have Group Messages by
Conversation set on.

I'm not interested in taking the time to get past messages I've
already read. It's standard netiquette to quote enough of the
message you're replying to to put your response into perspective.
Even if I didn't hide already-read messages, if I read a message
without a quote, I would then have to take the time to go back up
to read another message to figure out what this one is about.

That also takes much more time than I'm willing to invest. The
result is that when someone posts a reply without quoting, unless
the message he is replying to came in the same batch as his reply
and I just read it, in most cases I can make no sense of it, and
I just quickly pass it by.

Since many other newsgroup participants do the same thing,
posting without quoting is a good way to get your messages
ignored by many people.

Why are you yelling at me? (and I've kept your content).

I thought I was doing the guy a favour to point out another way to
filter out un-wanted stuff.

Sorry if it appeared that I was yelling at you. That wasn't my
intent. I was rather agreeing with Gordon, and explaining my
rationale for that agreement.

And that's fine. You and I have different points of view on this,
apparently, but I have no problem with your expressing yours.

You don't have a clue about what I think about this. You have no basis
to conclude that we have different points of view. We may even agree.
Re-read the thread and you'll see I don't give any clue. I didn't even
express a view. I just gave Gordon an alternative way to view the
newsgroup postings which I assumed (wrongly) he didn't know about.

At most you can infer an that that it's impossible to control how most
people post. I said nothing about any newsgroup etiquette issues.

Have it your way. I already apologized for apparently giving you
the wrong idea. If you want to continue to be angry with me,
that's your prerogative. I'm not interested in participating in a
flame war with you, and this is the end of the conversation, as
far as I'm concerned.

You'll find that Ken and Bruce will tell you how they're sure you
view/feel/infer anything you say, and if they can't, they'll convolute it so
badly as to completely be worthless tripe...except to them. Their last resort,
if unable to inform you and make you realize that what *they* think you are is
most certainly correct, is to say you're wrong and either run off or plonk you.

Bruce will snip the hell out of the thread so as to make completely
senseless too.

Yes. That's exactly what he did, didn't he ...
