File sharing between desk top and lap top.

Hi I am trying to set up a LAN between my desk top and lap top for file
sharing. I have them connected together and I have them pinging each other.
However I am not sure how I go on from there. I realise that I have to map
but…..well this is what I have done with no success. I have made a new folder
on the C: drive of computer One and made it shareable. I have then gone to
computer Two and gone into My Computer/tools/Map network drive and then I see
that a Drive Z is allocated and in the folder I put \\One\Sharefolder and
click finish but I get “The network Path \\One\Share could not be found. I am
missing something or doing something wrong. Where and what. Thanks. Charlie

Charlie,

The error "network path not found..." can have several causes.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-53-aka-name-not-found.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-53-aka-name-not-found.html

Common causes are misconfigured / overlooked firewalls, and registry setting
restrictanonymous. Also look at name resolution on each computer.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Please let us know if any of these suggestions are of any help. What you learn
may help others in the future, and that's the purpose of these forums.

Have you run the Network Setup Wizard on both computers? Make sure both are
set with different computer names and the workgroup name is the same on
both...default is MSHOME which should be just fine.

Also, I believe, an NTFS file system can read a FAT32 but FAT32 will not see
an NTFS. Make sure both computers are set with same file system.
Hope this helps.

Well Chuck has said it in passing. My Firewall was stopping my transfer or
the recognition of the home computer. It was Norton Internet Security and
once I had disabled that all is well. Thanks again gentlemen for your prompt
input and thanks also for the many links that will give me a greater
understanding of networking.

Charlie,

That's great news. The firewall done it (again).

But please don't stop there. Learn to configure the firewall properly - it's a
useful component in a layered defense strategy.

No, that's not necessary. The file system is irrelevant in
networking. Each computer reads its own disk and sends the contents
to other computers over the network.
