File Sharing and MS Networking

Don Simard

I purchased a new Laptop and I wanted to transfer data files from my
desktop. I have tried a number of things

First attempt:
Share folder on Desktop and broswe to the share from the laptop
place both in same workgroup (Home)

Results
I browse to the computer in Network Places then click on the Share
point. The following popup error occurs: (names are changed to protect
innocent
\\Delldesktop\DonDocuments is not accessible. You may not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions.

Access is denied

Second attempt
I decided to mount the share point as a network drive using my account
name and password

Result
1st popup window with message
Attempting to connect to \\Delldesktop\DonDocuments
2nd popup
Windows cannot access \Delldesktop\DonDocument as
\\delldesktop\firstname lastname due to the following error:

the specified username is invalid.

To connect as another user, enter their username and password below

Third attempt
I then entered the admin account and password for delldesktop

Result
Same as second attempt.

I am now stumped! Can anyone help. I can resort to burning CDs but that does
not solve the problem. Can you reply here and in my email?

Does both systems have the same user account setup (same password etc) ? -
If so there should be no problems as long as the user has access rights to
the remote share.

No - both systems do not have the same accountsnames and passwords. Does
Sharing mean it is available to more than the user? and even if the accounts
are different, isn't mounting a network drive and supplying the account and
password mean that the accounts to not have to be the same?

You do need permissions to access files and folders on the remote system

doesn't Mapping a Network Drive and providing username/password suffice for
permission to access fules owned by username?

no - take a look here http://www.rhyshaden.com/nt_flder.htm
Does the user logged on remotly have permissions to access, read, write
folders?
J

thanx for the patience

I am using XP Home Edition and NTFS but I do not see any permission settings
I notice from site you sent me

"A shared folder is indicated by a hand holding the folder. If the user has
the right to log on locally, then they can bypass the share permissions. "

what does that mean?

this is what I think I was trying to do "
You can access a shared folder by clicking Map Network Drive in the NT
Explorer tools menu. designate the drive letter, the UNC path and the user
account. If an Administrator is at another machine that does not normally
have access to a particular resource, then the administrator would need to
enter the domain name and user account name (Domain/User_name) plus the
password. You can make this connection a one off or you can click the
Reconnect at Logon box. "

I don't get it!

You need to have the same account on both systems for permissions to work
correctly - If the user accounts don't match (name and password) then
restrictions will take place

success! I did more research on it and found a reference to the command line
program cacls which can add permisions ro XP Home NTFS files. I think the
command I used was

CACLS *.* /T /G Everyone:R

which Granted Read access to all files starting at the current directory and
Traverse the directory structure. Voila I can see the files from the Share
point and began to transfer them

AMEN!

thanx for all the help
