file server hang

I have a 2000 file server that started experiencing intermitent hangs a few
weeks ago. Hardware was checked with technical service (Dell) and was ok. One
day a user noticed that the server hanged when viewing jpg files in thumbnail
view. Effectively I can reproduce this behaviour with any jpg file in
thumbnail view, viewed from a network share or even from the server console.
Any ideas?

How large are the jpegs? Could be resource load generating the
thumbnails...
 
The jpegs are not very big, they are between 300 Kb and 1 Mb. The server
freezes completely and I have to press the power button to reset it.
