File search window pane grayed out (XP)

When trying to search for a file in explorer, or from Start->Search, the pane
containing the search companion is completely grayed out. Suggestions?

Click Start, Run. Type the following command and press ENTER:

regsvr32 jscript.dll

Press {ENTER}

This helps in most cases. If not, you'll have to reinstall Search Companion
using the INF file. See:

reinstalling Search using INF?
