file save problem in excel

The user is unable to save his excel files except as a webpage. There are no
other choices in the file > menu, and the (floppy) icon for save doesn't
appear. No other choices in Save As except 'Save as a webpage' and no
ordinary Save option. If you try to just close the doc, the prompt asks if
you want to save it and will save an .xls doc, but no content, just a blank
workbook. I tried the solution(s) below but they didn't work. the Office
suite has been uninstalled and reinstalled, at least once. Another app,
(Outlook) will not open at all.

I am not able to find any relevent error messages in Event Viewer. Any
suggestions?

Thanks,
Duncan

Sometimes one of these works when you're having trouble with double clicking
on
the file in windows explorer:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

Maybe one of these will work for you.

I wouldn't expect the options you tried to have any effect on the problem.

If you start excel in safe mode:

Close excel
windows start button|Run
excel /safe
and file|Open your workbook

Do you get all the options that you'd normally see under the File menu?

What's the name of the file that you're opening? Is it a normal file located on
a local harddrive?

What version of excel are you using?

When you see the "save as webpage", is the "file as type" greyed out--or is it
enabled with no other options?

Do have have the "save: Selection: Sheet" optionbutton checked?

How about the Add interactivity checkbox?

If you start a brand new workbook while you're in safe mode, do you have the
same trouble when you try saving?

If you start a brand new workbook while you're in excel's normal mode, do you
have the same trouble?

Maybe more info will help????
