File Rename problem

My "My Pictures" folder has about 6000 photos, grouped into subfolders,
primarily by year and then by batch of photos from my digital camera. For
example, in the "2005 Photos" folder, I have a folder "2005_0807 Divide
Road". The low level folders are usually set up to a "filmstrip" view. To
rename a file, I open the folder, slowly double-click on a file name and get
a box to type in the new name, as expected. I type in a new name, then
press return. The old name appears under the photo. When I double-click on
the icon, nothing seems to happen, because it looks like it can't locate the
file. When I go up one folder level and then back down into the folder, the
new name is there and everything is working fine. I can then double-click on
it and display it with Microsoft Office Picture Manager.

Can someone please explain what is happening and how to fix it?

Sounds like Explorer isn't noticing that you changed the name of the file
(until you leave and return to the directory). You can press F5 after you
rename the file to force an update. Also, I use F2 to start the renaming
process, since the two ..... single .... clicks ..... process is somewhat
tedius.

Your solutions worked. It looks like a bug in Windows, but at least this
saves me a lot of time flip-flopping between folders.
