File refresh/F5 question FPvsCSS

L

Larry

I run FP2K and am changing my site to use css. I use TopStyle Lite for
my css. When I modify a stylesheet and then switch back to FP the red
busy button is lit for a short moment. I presume that is when it
registers the changes in the stylesheet. I usually then press F5 to
update files.

Finally - my question is: does the F5 refresh feature modify the
_vit_cnf files or do they only change on the Tools|Refresh... function?

Reason I ask is FP frequently gets confused and does not display the
latest stylesheet. Either that or it doesn't work anymore. I ran into
the same problem previously when modifying pages using a text replacer
that did not change the _vit_cnf data. The updated information wasn't
displayed until the _vit_cnf files were deleted and hyperlinks recalculated.

Don't mess with the _vti files...
Repeat, don't mess with the _vti files

That said, did you add Topstyle to FrontPage as the Default CSS editor??
If so, when you save the CSS edits, FrontPage will automatically update the CSS file info.
However, you also need to save any "pages" you have open in FrontPage.

Then "Preview in Browser" to see the changes.
If you already have a page open in "Preview in Browser" when you maximize or switch to it
from the Task Bar, FrontPage and the browser will "normally" refresh it.
If not simply hit F5 or the "Refresh Icon" on the toolbar.

Thanks Steve,
Topstyle is the default css editor and FP does update when I switch back
after updating a stylesheet. I didn't always update the page on which
the css was being updated. oh well - procedures.....

I would like to know why I should not "mess with _vti files" as I have a
different problem related to them. I generate pages from an access db to
a folder in my web. Even if I recalculate hyperlinks often the changes
do not show up. If I delete files in the _vti folder for that folder
before generating the new pages and then recalculate links then
everything is fine. I figured it was a 'designed fault' and worked
around it. Is this the wrong thing to do even tho it works?

The _vti folders are managed by the FP extensions, and since you are generating the pages via ASP,
the _vti folder shouldn't even have a impact on the pages within the folder, except when you
publish, which should be solved by running Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks so that the extensions
knows that the folder content has changed.
