File portion of Explorer freezes when selecting drop down ...

This problem stymies me because I tried a number of optimizations that do not
work.

On machines at a small office connected via LAN in Peer to Peer Mode (all 1
GB RAM machines and a router gets them on the internet) With Explorer as a
file browser, clicking on the the drop down boxes to select a location such
as My documents, My Computer or, more importantly, network places and mapped
drives) the system literally locks up for a good minute or two before showing
the list of choices. Subsequent clicks on the drop down are instantaneous
but closing explorer and trying again brings the problem back. This happens
in all cases especially when In Microsoft Office trying to "Save As ..." to
some other location besides the default.

SP 2 and all the latest patches have been applied. The problem also occurs
when all other non Microsoft services have been shut down (i.e. antivirus
from EZtrust, Messenger systems INCLUDING MSN and printer services for HP fax
printers)

This is hurting us badly, please help thanks!

Does anyone have a solution to this issue?

It turned out that the machine had a mapped drive to a bad share (like Drive
Z: mapped to \\machine\badshareisgone) ... took that out and the problem went
away :|

I could have sworn I checked this by the "bashareisgone" share happened to
be one letter apart from the "goodshareishere" share ... In essence, the
troubleshooting walk through made me check all network neighborhood links and
mapped drives by hand ... bad ones were removed.

Ralph
