File permissions problem

rab

I am running Windows XP Pro and I am the only user of the computer and there
is only one account - mine - and I have administrator permissions. BUT I am
denied access to some of the subdirectories on my computer. What gives?

My account has administrator permissions. How do I change the permissions
on the subdirectories to which I am denied access?

I'm guessing you're talking about System Volume Information?
That's by design - that folder contains the System Restore backup
information, and isn't really meant to be accessed like a normal file
folder.

THANK YOU. This was really annoying. It's my computer and I should not be
excluded from any part of it!!! I was actually wondering if someone had
managed to install a backdoor and exclude me from those areas. (Silly of me
.... perhaps.)

Its just superhidden - it doesn't have any restrictive permissions for
Administrators, only for lower level users

Are you sure about that Alex?

I'm an admin on all my systems, and I get an Access Denied when I try to
access that folder. CACLS shows that only NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM has Full
control of the folder; no other accounts or groups have permission to it.

Once I take ownership of the folder, I can get in.

Thanks Wesley,
I believe your link proves my point - by default, only the System account
has access to that folder.

It appears to be a Home vs Pro matter. On my desktop Pro and my Tablet,
I can access from my regular 'admin status' account: the only one
defined when I set up (once of course I have set the visibility). And
I have done nothing to security settings for it. On a machine with a
fairly pristine Home it is unavailable even to Administrator at Safe
boot

Add: And of course I am not using Simple File Sharing in Pro. That is
probably at the heart of the matter.
