file ownership problem

I set ownership for a particular folder earlier to include all
subfolders, only to discover now that every subfolder in that foler is
not accessible to me. I went back into safe mode and tried changing
each subfolder individually, but none of them are not accessible. I
tried changing ownership for the entire folder again, but still
doesn't work. HELP?
