File, open or save delay

Lately whenever I click File, then Open or Save/Save as, there is a long
delay before the drop down box opens, listing the available drives, documents
etc. Sometimes I get a "program not responding" message. I'm not sure where
to start to look for the answer to this, is this a file system problem?

"Program Not Responding" just means the program hasn't checked it's message queue for x seconds. If something takes an unexpected long time this will happen (after all Windows can't tell why it's not picking up it's messages so it guesses that it has crashed - if the program starts getting it's messages again windows will note it and list it as responding again - don't terminate the program when asked - it's just a timer message).

Do you have a network connection (perhaps an old one not used) or a DVD or CD in the drive?

Thanks for the response, no cd or dvd in the drive, I'm on a wireless
network. I've recently added a wireless all in one machine to the network,
about a month ago. This problem has cropped up in the last 10 days or so.

Get filemon from www.sysinternals.com. Monitor the drop down box and see what it is looking for.
