everytime i attempt to open or save a file from any program, i get a long
delay before the open/save dialog box opens and also long delays if i have to
change folders or drives, and an equally long delay when i save/open. i have
a dell inspiron 1100 laptop running win xp pro. i also have long delays in
opening context menus - regardless of file type. could these problems be
associated?

please HELP!! it's making it increasingly difficult to get any work done....

Cause :
1.Virus, malware etc.
2.Anti-Virus application
3.Fragmentation

Tell which one you think is the cause...

1. not a virus - i use CA virus scanner and is scanned daily and
automatically updated with virus definitions.
2. have had this a/v app since i got the computer 2 yrs ago. problem just
showed up about 6 mo ago.
3. fragmentation? a possibility, but doubtful. i defrag regularly, but
haven't for about 3-4 mo.

any other suggestions?

One possibility is that the system is just dying of WinRotT. If you have installed/uninstalled a lot of applications, they could
have left traces behind, not cleaned up after themselves, installed extra software, been poorly programmed and so on. Sometimes,
the system just gets too dirty and needs to be cleaned up, either by removing or repairing the damage or by reinstalling the OS.
For example, there may be a plugin or something which tries to access a missing file, thus causing a delay. This could certainly be
the problem.

Another option, and I hope for your sake the previous one is the case, is that your drive is just dying. If the drive gets damaged,
it could take multiple reads to get a piece of data off of the disk. This would cause a delay. Also, if there are damaged parts on
the platter, then the drive might all but hang the system until it times out after a read/write operation. In this case you would
need to replace the drive (I hope you have a warranty). You can try getting some diagnostic/repair tools from your drive
manufacturer's website and running those; sometimes they fix the problem (for the short term), sometimes they just confirm what's
wrong.

could these problems be associated?

Most likely.

Another thing could be a network/shared drive that is not being enumerated
properly by th OS when you're trying to save. Do you get an issue after the
Save as dialog box opens where you try to drop down the Look In box and it
freaks out or seems to lag?
