FILE OPEN IN EXPLORER

I recently installed 2000 and now and media files (mpeg,
mpg, etc.) try to open in Internet Explorer instead of
going to Windows Media Player. In the lower left of the
screen the IE logo changes to a curved red arrow with a
disk underneath saying that it is downloading the file.
Then shortly afterward I get a blank screen except for a
small box in the upper left corner with a box containing
red square, blue pyramid and a green circle. Also, .pdf
files open in Explorer and not in Adobe as it had before.
Any help would be appreciated.

Let me add too that I have checked file folder properties
and the extensions are set to play in Media Player.
