File Not Imported?

Very vague question but here it goes....I am trying to import an Excel 2003
file into Access 2003 but all I'm getting is the message below without any
explanation of why.

"An error occured trying to import file 'N:\accounting\blah blah..\_.xls'.
The file was not imported."

I don't know if it means anything, but the Access window that lists the
tables reads:

Revenue: Database (Access 2000 file format)

Does Access revert back to an older format if excel information is imported
or does this have anything to do with my issue?

The fact that the database says 2000 format doesn't have anything to do with
the import you are trying to do. Can you explain the steps you are taking
maybe we are able to help you on the error you are receiveing when importing
the file.

I am using the *New button and selecting Import table. I select the .xls
file which has 5 sheets. On the sheet the columns all start with Date which
goes back to 06/01/2007. I click on a sheet, select the checkbox for the
column headings. New table is selected and I simply select next instead of
modifying the fields. The Field Name: Date doesn't show up with a selectable
data/type list box. I don't know why that is, but anyways, after that I
choose column heading "Date" as the key and give it it's own name for a
table. When i click on "finish" that's when I get the error message. I hope
what I've written will help you help me. Thanks for your time.

Ok,

I almost get it. Which version are you using maybe I can try to replicate it.

So in the excelsheet you have a columheading called date which has a couple
of rows with dates beneath them right? Also are the dates not a result of a
formula in other words are they really entered dates?

(remember that "Date" is a reserved word in Access)

let me know so i can give it a shot...

they are formula's that compute the date, i.e., A1= 06/01/2007 A2=A1+1, so
that may solve the issue of it not being recognized. Both excel and access
are 2003 versions. What do you mean by reserved word? I am exremely new to
access and I'm not loving it so far. Thanks again for your advice and
expertise.

I think that the formulas are causing the trouble. Is it possible to paste
those as values in the worksheets? First, give it a try and try importing it
again to access. Make sure you try this with a copy of your workbook so you
won't kill any productionwork. If the import goes well you know where your
problem is.

By reserved words I mean that Access uses reserved words internally so it's
not good to use those as field names. Date is used for an internal function
so in most cases people change this to DateImport or something like that.
There ar various words you can look them up in the helpfiles of the various
office apps.

Hang on to access the step may seem big but once you get the hang of it
you'll love it ;-)

Thatnks for all of your help Maurice, but changing the date heading or the
formulas did not work. I am going to try and track down our guru here on
site.
