File Navigation Crashes Program

This is probably more of a general Office question, or
perhaps even a Windows question. But it first showed up
in FrontPage 2002, so I'll start here.

When I bring up a File Dialog box to, say, insert a
picture, navigating up my directory tree causes the
program to hang (that is, go into a not responding state).

I have noticed the same thing in Word 2000.

I'm running Windows XP Professional SP1, Front Page 2002,
and Office 2000. I have all the critical updates for
Windows and Office 2000 and Office XP (for FrontPage
2002).

Any suggestion on why I am having this problem.

Have you run a defrag of your HD?

so ... run it anyway, it will not hurt and just may solve the problem
