File name shown as being in use

I have a construction company client where two users
running Windows 2000 Pro and Office 97 are having the same
problem. When they open any Word or Excel file they get
the following error message:

File name shown as being in use by Jonathon (or user name)
currently logged in. "Do you want to make a copy"?

This is a single user machine and Jonathon is the only
user and has administrative rights. When he clicks cancel
all is well and he can edit or save with no problem
however when he opens it again he's greeted by the same
message. This occurs with all Word and Excel files.
Copying the files to another folder or setting up and
logging in as another user makes no difference. That
error message always pops up first for all files.

Anyone have any idea or similar experience?

Thank you,
Tony Hutchison
