I know there are many freeware or open source file managers to replace
windows explorer, but I want to know your opinions.

The ones I use are:

Turbo Navigator v1.47
their old homepage is not avaliable anymore but heres this one
http://www.woundedmoon.org/win32/turbonavigator.html

EF Commander Free 3.85
get it from downloads page very bottom
http://www.efsoftware.com/dw/e.htm
NOTE: This works great except under Win XP that I know of its copy and move
routine for CD's and DVD's is very and I mean very slow around 800k,
whereas EF Commander Free is around 3150k.

XYplorer 4.50.0018
But alas I hear going shareware
http://www.xyplorer.com/product.htm
NOTE: I only have this on my cpu to try it, it looked promising, but on
installing I noticed TABs not side-by-side as the above 2, man I wish
side-by-side was an option in more file managers.

I know other people have other preferences and I and probably others would
like to know as well.

They're side-by-side for me.

A question what is side-by-side, I can see 2 tabs beside each other but on
clicking each tab they fully control the window, I want both tabs option
open side-by-side in the window so I can for example without clicking
anything just look at 2 directories at once, or do simple drag-n-copy/move.
I checked to tools-->configuration and can not find this side-by-side
feature.
As I said I want to see 2 directories open at once, running a second
session of XYplorer is not the solution either.
Did I miss something or was there a missunderstanding?

No offence intended, only questions.

For side-by-side view - have a look at xplorer2_lite

http://zabkat.com/x2lite.htm

You can have 2 panes side-by-side or up-and-down,
plus it has tabs,
plus it has bookmarks...

It has a very active forum with the developer.
Bottom line - it's a great file manager.

I REALLY like FreeCommander from
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/freecommander.html

Pros: FC has bunches of services and goodies that are accessible right
from the menu and button bars. A truly impressive array of controls and
commands.

Cons: Be warned that FC doesn't refresh thumbnail-images as smoothly as
Windows Explorer does, and resets the window to the top of the page
often while in thumbnial view. This issue has been known to cause the
graphic-arts-people in my office to erase FC with a vengeance and
return to Windows Explorer.

One last thing---but it's personal---I noticed that FC chokes when
copying or moving lage files or large amounts of files (I'm talking
about the 4-10 GIG range here). Windows Explorer just does the job
without complaint, but FC kinda dies off and doesn't tell you that
anything went wrong. This is personal because I lost a lot of work one
day when I THOUGHT that I had backed-up my files in preparation for the
IT guys to do something radical to my computer. When I went back to
retrieve that back-up---it wasn't there because FC choked on the large
amount of files and didn't say anything about it.

I found ExplorerXP 1.07
http://www.explorerxp.com/index.html#home target=

It allows the side-by-side I am looking for, I just made a second tab then
under Windows I clicked tile vertically, works great and I can use the tree
to navigate though the focused tab window, then do my dragging, comparing
as I see fit. Unfortunetly the dragging with the mouse only moves files not
option of copy/move, but a small drawback.

also found Oxpus, a file manager
http://www.m4rko.com/oxpus/home.asp
Side-by-side YES, drag-n-drop copy/move NO, but cut-n-paste for file
transfer YES.

I keep looking maybe I will find more.

It asks you for your Name and email address. I won't call that
"freeware", as you are paying for it - with information.

The following name and email address worked for me.

I like Free Commander the best.
http://www.freecommander.com/index_en.htm

ServantSalamander (freeware version) is an excellent lightweight file
manager.
http://www.altap.cz/salam_en/freeware.html

XYPlorer's author has made it clear that dual pane will never be a feature.
http://www.xyplorer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=121&highlight=dual
Too bad:-(

I couldn't find all the features that I needed/wanted using freeware so I
purchased $ware.

I'm hoping the ACF pages will speed up your search. *Please* post
comments any file managers you find and try.

Right click on the tab (above the file list), select New Tab. If that
doesn't do what you want, I'm lost.

That just adds a new tab does not make the file windows themselves both
visible side-by-side, only makes the tabs visible side-by-side along the
top/bottom depending on preference, but thank-you for trying.

While comparing the folders contents with
each other, turbo navigator can compre the
folders/directories names as well. Most of
the fm compare the files names leaving out
the folders/directories names.

Agreed, and I don't think anything else I've seen is even close.
