File in use... but no one has it open.

Issue Description
=================

After opening a specific Excel file on the server and then closing
it the, file it will not open for any other clients.
The message appears that the file is locked for editing,
but no one has the file open. Rebooting the
server makes the issue go away until the first user
of this file tries to reopen the file. This issue only
happens on one specific server running Windows 2000
and one specific Excel file. The problem does not occur if
we place the file on the local drive or place the
file on another server.

Suggestions Tried
=================

1. Clear the temporary folders.
2. Disable any anti-virus programs on the server.
3. Renamed file
4. Saved file on different server, renamed it and then placed it
on original server
5. Send file to some Excel folks and they tested and
all worked fine on their side.

For more information, please refer to the post titled
"Excel file keeps saying it's in use... but no one
has it open?!" in the newsgroup
"microsoft.public.office.misc" (issue id: 20683460).

HUMMM, It sounds like someone put a password on the file
so that it can not be edited. I would look into that.

Hope this helps.

Dear Blaine,

Thank you for your posting.

If I understand properly, after you open a specific Excel file on a
specific server, close it and then reopen it you receive the error message
saying that "File in use".

This problem seems to be unusual. Before we go any further, I would like to
confirm the following information:

1. Does this problem exist when you open other Excel files on the server?

If this problem only occurs when you open this specific Excel file, it
seems that this problem is also related to this Excel file. To trouble
shoot this problem efficiently, please perform the following steps to
create a new Excel file to test this issue again:

1. In Excel, create a new Excel file.
2. Open the specific file with problems, press Ctrl+A to select all the
contents on one worksheet, and press Ctrl+C to copy it.
3. Switch to the newly created Excel File, press Ctrl+V. The worksheet's
contents will be pasted. The only format that you need to adjust is the
fill color of cells.
4. Save the newly created Excel file and test whether this problem still
remains on this new Excel file.

If this problem does not occur, you can copy worksheets from the Excel file
with problems to the new file one by one to test this issue.

In addition, I would like to emphasis that not only the MS02-070 security
patch should be installed on the server but also any Windows XP-based
client computers should be upgraded to Service Pack 1 (SP1), and then
obtain and install the hotfixes that are described in Microsoft Knowledge
Base articles 328170 and 812937.

If this problem continues, you may perform the following steps to check
which process is occupying the handle of the file:

1. Download and unzip the Handle utility from the following link:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/handle.shtml

2. Click Start, and click Run.
3. Type "command" in the text box, and click OK.
4. Run the following command in the Command window:

handle -a > C:\info.txt

5. Open the "c:\info.txt" fiel and check the problem excel file. For
example, if the Excel file is named "sample.xls", you will find a line that
is similar to the following. The handle of this file is 0x8f4.
8f4: File D:\ sample.xls

6. Then we can use the Process Explorer tool to locate the process that is
holding the file handle. It can be downloaded from the following link:

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml

If the process is a third party one, you can terminate it in Task Manager
to test this issue again.

If you have any updates, please feel free to let me know. I am glad to be
of assistance.

Have a nice day!

| No, there is no password. The issue seems to lie with the server.
