File extensions

Is there a way to make file extensions show up when you've set the view to
details in a folder? I mean a universal way. I really don't care for the
graphics when I just want a list of files and what type they are.

Yes, go in Folder Options | View tab and uncheck the "Hide extensions
for known file types" option.
