Somehow I've managed to make it so each time I try to run an .exe file,
Internet Explorer is the program that tries to open it.

I don't know how to change it back. Any suggestions?

Click Start, type regedit.exe and press Enter.
Navigate to the following branch:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe

Delete the sub-key named "UserChoice"
Close Regedit.exe
