File extensions

When I installed OpenOffice I had it set all Microsoft Office files to
open with it. When I uninstalled Microsoft Office it removed all those
definitions. I was just wondering where they are stored. I just
downloaded an Excel document. It wouldn't open so I set it to open all
files of that type (xls) in OpenOffice. That works. Where is the
association saved? I looked in Folder Options/File Types and XLS is not
there. Properties indicates that it is a Microsoft Excel Worksheet but
it opens in OpenOffice. Please explain.

sounds like when
you removed msoffice
the file extension was
removed as well.

if you want an xls file
to be opened by openoffice
then you might have to
re-create the xls extension
file type then set it
to open with openoffice.

however, it wouldn't be a bad idea
to keep msoffice installed
because openoffice is still
being improved upon/work in progress....

keep in mind that it
is openoffice is open source.
Therefore it is vulnerable
to corruption and programming
by creative hackers and covertly
coded into the open source
office and modules.

however Microsoft has
mineralized or
virtually eliminated
vulnerabilities in msoffice.

hmm?, corporation, foreign country
and/or u.s. secret initiatives
are still alive and well.

is it a viable concern or paranoia?

The associations are stored in the registry. The easy way to manage file
associations is through the folder options tab in explorer or the control
panel.

The reason the worksheet opens in OpenOffice is that you told OpenOffice to
open such files. The extension or the icon by themselves have no meaning.
