FILE EXISTS ERROR in opening Excel

M

msuryexcel

Hello:
Whenever I open a new Excel instance I am getting the error "Fil
already exists" error. The options are "OK" and "HELP". AS usual, th
"HELP" button does not actually help identify the file that is causin
the error.
The "header' on the dialog box is "Microsoft visual Basic"

I tried reinstalls and changing the version of Excel -- but it di
nothelp with a resolution of the problem.

Hitting "ESC" removes the dialog box. Also the error appears only ver
first time eof opening excel. OPening a second file, after the firs
one is opened, does not have this error.

I am not sure if this error is the result of an install/uninstall of
third party software from "Solver.com".

Any suggestions to get rid of this annoyance is very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I don't think that there's enough information in your post to get any definitive
help, but you can do some detective work and try to find out what's causing the
trouble.

Here are a couple of sites that explain how to troubleshoot startup problems:

Chip Pearson's:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

Jan Karel Pieterse's:
http://www.jkp-ads.com/Articles/StartupProblems.htm

Essentially, you move all of the stuff out of XLStart and you turn off all the
addins under Tools|addins.

Then you start adding things back one at a time and testing each time to see if
the problem is fixed. When you add something back that causes the problem to
come back, you'll have to decide what to do with that addin.
