File Deletion

I am trying to delete a bunch of jpeg files that are on my desktop. When
I try to delete them I get a message that says I can not because they
are write protected or in use. I have no idea how they got this way
because I just placed them there. I cannot iopen them, delete them or
move them. Iget the same message each time. HELP????
