"file could not be saved" problem

I'm using Windows XP-Home on my HP PC. Recently, I've started to
encounter a problem when I'm online and click on links to audio files,
driver update links, etc. I get the following error message:

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\OWNER\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\filename.ext could
not be saved because the source file could not be read.

What does this mean, and how (step by step because I'm a novice) do I
fix it?

Forgot to add that each time I click on the same link, "filename.ext"
changes to a different, apparently randomly generated mixture of
alphanumeric characters.

Sure would appreciate hearing from somebody about this!

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
later than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show?

Well, I've only had this computer for about 2 months and it came
pre-loaded with Norton Antivirus 2003. It's been clean from day one,
always using the most current definition files.

A new computer is no guarantee of not having a virus infection. To be
safe, also remove spyware with Spybot S&D and Ad-aware. These steps are
just normal Windows troubleshooting. Does this only happen when you are
trying to download something (and clicking on an audio link)? If yes,
then - after you're sure the computer has no spyware - try
right-clicking on the link and choose "save target as". Does that help?

The problem turned out to be with Netscape 7.1 and one of its component
files (compreg.dat) that was corrupted. I deleted the file and all is
once again well with the world. Your point is well taken, though, and I
appreciate your chiming in. Regular virus and spyware maintenance is
essential.
