File copy slow performance comparing W2k and WinXP Pro

I found that there is very strong slow down of files copy speed, when
copying from local HD to USB memory stick (DiskOnKey) and also from HD to
Mapped Network Drive with Windows XP.
I did benchmark, when I copied ~80 files of total size ~3MB to USB mem.stick
(under Windows Explorer and also from CMD window using xcopy). I performed
it on Win2000 and then on XP Professional on the same machine (Pentium 3,
512 MB SDRAM, VIA Chipset).
It takes 5 sec on Win2000 and 40 sec on XP. I tried several optimization
tips for XP ,that I found on WEB, but with no effect.

What could be a reason for this degradation?

There are some internal changes between 2000 & XP on disk
operations. Those speed variances are not indicative of a error
using XP. Some low-level routines in 2000 are not implemented
correctly, but fixed in XP. Storage Reviews forums has a number
of postings about it.
