File Associations

Using WinXp SP2. I have a folder within Windows Explorer that contains
several hundred Icons that I can use when placing something on the
desktop. This is in addition to the MS equivalent in system32. Recently
I installed a totally useless bit of software that decided it was taking
control of all my ICO files and nominated itself as the "associated"
program. The software was uninstalled within a day or two but my icon
folder has changed. Where before each ICO file had the icon displayed
alongside the individual name, I now have a bland MS file icon
displayed. Is there a way of getting back to my original state in that
all the icons within the folder are displayed individually along side
their file name.
