File associations in Windows XP

I want to associate all picture files with Microsoft Picture It! Express
7.0, which I have been using for successfully for several years. I recently
had hard drive problems, and my hard drive was replaced by Dell. I now
cannot change picture files to open with this program. I cannot add it to
the OpenWith list, no matter what I try. If I open the program, I can open
all picture files and change file types, but I cannot successfully associate
the program with any file type.

Any suggestions?

You have tried associating the individual file types:

a). In the program you want to use (has it got a 'file types' option to
define what filetypes are associated with it)?

b). In 'Folder Options' > 'File Types' by manually using the 'Advanced'
option to set the 'open' command to browse to the desired program.

Tim, thanks much for this. Using your steps, I have managed to associate
gif, bmp, and jpg files with PictureIt Express 7.0, which now appears in my
OpenWith list. Now, however, when I navigate to My Pictures and double-click
on the picture I want to open, the PictureIt canvas page opens, but I am
getting the dialog box for "File Open" and showing all my pictures. If I
double-click on a picture there, it then opens in the PictureIt window. I'd
like to open the file without the extra step, as I was doing before
reinstalling Windows. Any suggestions on this?

Thanks.

Try these steps...right click a picture and choose...
Properties / General tab / Change button / Browse button...

This will open your 'Program Files' folder.

Navigate to and open the 'Microsoft Picture It' folder and
double left click - pip.exe.

Now Picture It! should be displayed and selected in your
Open With list...just left click...OK / Apply / OK...to complete
the association change.

You'll have to perform these steps for each format you wish
to associate with Picture It!.

More info:

(307859) HOW TO: Change File Associations
in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307859

Try this...open an image folder and right click one
of your image files...from the menu, select...Open
With / Choose Program.

Make your choice from the list or Browse to the
correct program if it is not in the list. If you want
the Windows XP default...choose "Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer".

Once you make your selection...be sure to check
the box that says: "Always use the selected program
to open this kind of file". (you will need to do this
for each format....jpg, .tif, .gif...etc.)

Also...you can right click an image and from the
menu...choose...Properties / Change Button...
choose the program you wish to use and click...
OK / Apply / OK.

Also...in WinXP, you can go to...My Computer /
Tools / Folder Options / File Types tab...

This sounds like a problem with XP that when you use the 'File Types'
'Advanced' option and associate a program with the 'open' command (which is
what I think you did here) it forgets to add:

"%1"

....at the end of the command...expecting the average user to know that you
have to do that!

So try re-opening the file types that don't open the exact file within
'Folder Options' > 'File Types'
and press on the 'Advanced' button again and in the 'open' command add
EXACTLY -

"%1"

....to the end of the path to the program (with a space between AND keep the
quotation marks).

Really hope that this does if for you.

P.S. For your info - Adding the "%1" thing represents the %replaceable%
filename at the end of the command and is thus 'replaced' by the filename
(and path to it - hence the need for the "quotes") when you 'double-click'
on a picture file.

Tim, thank you so much!!! I have added the quotes and everything is now
working as before. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your advice.

John, Thanks for your reply. I had, unfortunately, explored those options.
I have just added the quotes around "%1" as Tim suggested, and now everything
is working perfectly. I do appreciate your taking the time to respond.

....and I am so glad you were able to de-cypher my terrible way of explaining
things!

So well done all round!

P.S. don't forget the 'Add' button where you don't have to just have an
'open' command (which will be the default option, that is; the one that
happens when you double click on a file ) but you can add an "open with
mspaint" command (then associate it with mspaint.exe as before) and when you
right-click on a given file you will have 'Open' at the top and then 'Open
with mspaint' further on down!!

I have the problem of when I try and open a file I get the message I ahve to
associate it with a program. The problem is 1) I don't know what program to
associate it with and 2) where I go for "folder options". My computer is a
HP Pavilion Entertainment PC. It is running Vista XP. While I'm in Mozilla
Firefox I can find "Options" but that is it. I'm lost after that. When I go
to "Advanced" I can finding nothing of which your write in your answer to
Leslie. I'm really frustrated after having spent 2 hours on this. What I'm
trying to do is open a video clip sent to me by a Kodak EasyShare Z700
camera. I am not giving up on this.

You get to where you want to go via...

A. Control Panel
Folder Options
File Types

- or-

B. Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer)
Tools
Folder Options
File Types
